Position Title: Consumer Loan Underwriter
Location: Herndon, VA

Position Summary:

  • Process and underwrite consumer loans, including personal, auto, home improvement and credit card loans in accordance with company policy
  • Process loan applications that are submitted via indirect lending channels; approve, fund, and establish membership accounts
  • Collaborate effectively with branch personnel, underwriters and loan officers to ensure that loan applications are fully completed, the necessary supporting documentation is received, and the loan closes as scheduled
  • Analyze loan applicants’ financial status and credit to determine feasibility of granting loan and provide financial counseling to members
  • Approve consumer loans within authorized limits and communicate decisions to branch personnel and/or member; recommend approval or denial for those in excess of authorized limits; disburse loan checks and related information to members if applicable
  • Ensure loan documents are accurate, complete, and compliant with credit union policy
  • Recommend operational procedures to increase effectiveness of department operations
  • Provide information concerning policies, rates, payment schedules, and other loan related information to internal/external members
  • Respond to internal and external loan related member questions & research; may provide guidance on consumer lending practices, loan policies and procedures
  • Analyze, evaluate and approve, deny, or counter-offer loans as directed by company lending policy
  • Carefully review all of the information in the application and focus on the member’s ability to repay the loan, the willingness to repay the loan and the member’s existing assets and liabilities
  • Analyze the credit report and identify any red flags and discrepancies; determine if collateral is sufficient
  • Research loans with fraud warnings, and potential fraud, using information on the credit report and third party systems

Qualifications Summary:

  • Minimum three years consumer underwriting experience required
  • Knowledge of Debt Management Programs, to include Balance and Debt In Focus
  • LoansPQ and Power Center databases preferred
  • ePort credit reporting desired
  • Knowledge of Nada Guides, Auto Warranty and GAP programs
  • Proficient at pipeline management
  • Familiarity with fair lending practices and understanding of Fair Credit Reporting and lending industry guidelines
