5 Steps to Starting Your Job Search

1 Prepare Your Resume:
Your resume is your first introduction to an employer. Giving your resume a proper update and tailoring it for each job is vital to getting your foot in the door. When updating your resume, ensure all employment dates, company names, new positions, skills or achievement have been added. Double check all information and remember to spell check!

2 Polish-Up Your Online Appearance:
We live in a digital age where hiring managers and recruiters will view your online profiles prior to setting up an interview. Making a clean and professional impression is your best bet. Ensure both your resume and LinkedIn account are alike.

3 Increase Your Network:
Networking is one of the greatest assets when searching for jobs. Reach out to your current network and let them know you are seeking new opportunities. Make an effort to make new connections with recruiters and/or companies and share your job seeking interests online.

4 Target Your Efforts:
The best way to maximize your time is by knowing exactly what you’re looking for. Hone in on the exact type of role you desire that may include the opportunity for travel, flexibility, a certain work schedule, hybrid or remote work, a specific career level, a favorable company culture, etc.

5 Set Job Search Goals:
Your main goal is to obtain the right job for you. However, in order to help yourself stay on target and not lose sight of this goal you should map out your job search plan within a spreadsheet or document. Set smaller milestones for things such as: How many daily connections you plan to make, the amount of jobs you plan to apply to each week and the amount of interviews you hope to attend each month. This will hold you accountable, while keeping you on track.

Take the First Step:
It’s often stated that the first step is the hardest. Hopefully the first five steps listed above will inspire you to take that first step.
